ROOTS, MEMORIES AND CULTURE
Visitors to the modern nation of Ghana may visit Elmina and Cape Coast castles to see and hear about the trans-Atlantic slave trade. What they may never see are the long distances from the points of capture and sale to the coast. This 14-day seminar and tour, “Roots and Memories,” will take participants to several of the sites of capture, encampment and sale that were part of the long and painful journey of the captives from Northern Ghana to the coast. These sites include Gwollu, Salaga, Pinkoro, Kumasi, and Assin-Manso. Cultural attractions on this trip include a visit to Kakum National Park where a canopied walkway allows visitors to walk along the tree line to view various wild species of birds and animals, and Bonwire and Adanwomase, home of the famous Kente cloth. Confronting the memories of the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade and their resultant racism, disunity, stigma and race-privilege evoke sorrow and loss. The tour offers intellectual and spiritual space for participants to confront loss and sorrow through daily reflections, devotionals and conversations on race and reconciliation in the mornings, evenings, or during meals. We also recommend that you write daily in a personal journal to further explore the tour as a spiritual journey.
